September 6th: Fleet Brake Atlantic Night

SPORTSMAN
Friday evening marked a round of firsts for 2019 in the Sportsman division at Scotia Speedworld - starting with Number One Racing in victory lane for the first time this season.

Megan Parrott (Beaver Bank) drove to her first feature victory, the second of her Late Model career, on Friday evening. Parrott passed one of her Sportsman mentors and teammates Harry Ross White (Noel Road) for the lead and held off Travis Roma (West Chezzetcook) for the win on a final green-white-checkered finish. HOSS was able to get under Roma on the backstraight on the final lap after Roma wiggled off Turn Two. The bobble was enough for HOSS, driving for Bernie (Centre Burlington) to inch out second place at the finish. Brentley Pirri (Three Fathom Harbour) was able to grind out fourth place over reigning Sportsman champion Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) at the stripe.

HOSS and sophomore Darren Hilchie (Lake Charlotte) raced to heat race victories.
Point leader Deven Smith (Lakeside) failed to finish his first race of the season after an apparent axle problem would cause a wheel to fall on and ultimately sideline the No. 94 under the caution with two laps to go. Smith holds a comfortable 22 point lead over Veinotte heading into the season finale on Friday and would need to finish sixth or better in the final feature of the season, regardless of heat placement, to lock up his first Late Model track championship at Scotia Speedworld.

TOURSEC LIGHTNING

“I think this is the nicest ones we have, truly!”

Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood) returned to Scotia Speedworld victory lane on Friday evening in the Toursec Lightning class. After struggling with motor and electrical issues aboard the No. 169, including sensor problems during the heat race, the Neon held together for the win. In a battle of four cylinder heavyweights, the final five lap dash to the finish saw the 2017 champion race to the win in a close race ahead of the 2019 point leader “Rational” Richard Drake (Halifax), who held off a hard charging 2018 titlist Steve Matthews (Bedford). Chevy MacDonald (Stewaicke) brought his Cobalt home in fourth with Mike Jollimore’s (Halifax) bid for a second straight podium run falling just short in fifth.

Earl MacDonald (Stewiacke) scored his second straight heat race win with Jollimore taking the high handicap heat over David Jollimore (Halifax).

The race saw the return of the No. 158 car for Hillbilly Racing. With Jamie Dillman (Lantz) watching from the pits, “Big Daddy” Kenny Hopper (Enfield) was poised for a top five finish in the back up car before a hub broke coming out of Turn Four with five laps remaining.
Drake heads into Finale Friday the 13th with a 73 point lead over MacDonald and will only have to start the final feature event to mathematically clinch his first Scotia Speedworld track championship!

TOURSEC THUNDER
The victories are flowing for Taylor McLean (New Glasgow).

McLean, who won his first feature event in the Toursec Thunder division at the Toromont Cat 250 weekend, won his third in four races Friday night during Fleet Brake Atlantic Night. McLean started on the outside of row one on the final restart with 20 to go after Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) lost a right front wheel from the lead. McLean was able to get out front of Nic Baker (Middle Sackville) and keep point leader Jesse Deveau (Greenwood) at bay for his third win of 2019. Deveau was second while the MacPhee family duked it out for the final podium position. Sportsman standout Steve MacPhee (Yarmouth) finished third in his first Mini Stock appearance, racing to the trophy ahead of his son Shay (Yarmouth). Greg McKay (Eastern Passage) came home in fifth.

Deveau, who won the heat race, will enter Finale Friday the 13th looking to clinch his first pavement track championship. Deveau holds a 34 point lead and will have to finish 12th or better in the feature to mathematically clinch his first title at Scotia Speedworld, regardless of heat finish.

HYDRAULICS PLUS BEGINNER BANDOLERO

Emily Chisholm (Antigonish) took the upper hand in the Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandolero division heading into Finale Friday the 13th.

Chisholm scored her second straight and fourth overall feature victory of the season on Friday during Fleet Brake Atlantic Night. The No. 89 was in firm control of the 15-lap feature, including over two restarts in the second half of the event. Miles MacKenzie (Porter’s Lake) kept Chisholm honest on those restarts but ultimately settled for second. Leading Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie Brett Pashkoski was third after making a move on the last lap around Daniel Vandenberg (Glenholme). Caden Tufts (Timberlea) raced to a fifth place finish.

Chisholm also won the heat race, making it four straight races (two heats and two features) she has been able to win. She’ll take a one point advantage on MacKenzie heading into the season finale.

HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDIT
Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) captured his second career Hydraulics Plus Bandit victory on Friday night in an effort to close the gap on the championship battle heading into the season finale. MacKay started on the pole on the final restart with ten laps to go and established a gap over championship leader Gage Gilby (Enfield), holding it to the finish. Gilby finished second with Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) looking underneath the No. 25 on the final corner but would have to settle for third. Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) dug deep on the final lap to capture fourth ahead of Brooke Dowe (Bedford).

MacKay completed the sweep for the evening as the heat race winner. A top two feature finish, regardless of what happens in the heat race, would clinch the championship for Gilby on Finale Friday the 13th.

HYDRAULICS PLUS OUTLAWS

After a bumper falling off in his heat race, Danny Chisholm (Canning) rebounded nicely to win his fourth victory of the 2019 Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Outlaw season. Chisholm was smooth, making moves early to put himself up front and was lights out on the final restart at the halfway point in the 15-lap feature. Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) was second with Nathan Langille (Coldbrook) completing the podium. Dylan Dowe (Bedford) and Owen Mahar (Hubley) both came back from issues in the heat race to finish fourth and fifth in the feature.
Nate Singer (Kennetcook) was impressive in the heat race, taking home the checkered flag in the qualifier.

With Chisholm’s stumble in the heat, Noble actually gained points on the evening. Regardless of heat race finishes, Noble can lock down his second straight Outlaw title in Halifax with a podium feature finish on Finale Friday.
