SMITH SCORES FIRST SPEEDWORLD WIN IN SPORTSMAN 100

In front of the huge crowd assembled at Scotia Speedworld on Saturday evening, Colby Smith of Cape Sable Island finally got to victory lane in a Speedworld Sportsman main feature. Smith, who makes the long haul each week to the Speedworld started third on the grid for the Sportsman 100 and maintained a front running position all afternoon long. The race, which had been dominated by Darren Wallage of Oakfield came down to a restart with three laps to go. Smith kept on the outside of Wallage as the two went toe-to-toe for the lead until they came to the white flag where Wallage had inched out to the lead over Smith, who had positioned himself on the rear bumper of the #3 car. Smith waited for the opportunity on the final lap to make the move on Wallage and did so in the final corners as the two swapped paint all the way to the stripe with the #77 edging out the victory!

Wallage, who was visibly fatigued from 100-laps of racing on the tight Speedworld oval came home with second while Russell Smith Jr. in his second Sportsman start came home with third. Russell Smith Jr., the current Tirecraft Lightning car leader from Lakeside ran second for a handful of laps after having to come from the second half of the field after collecting a transfer spot in the “B” Feature. Completing the top five was Halifax’s Tony Leonard and Cole Harbour’s Mike Alexander – who had to rally from his 25th starting position to come home with a top five!

Thirty-four of Nova Scotia’s best Sportsman drivers attempted to qualify for the twenty-eight car field on Friday night through four ten lap heat races and a twenty-five lap “last chance” B Feature. Heat races were won by Waverley’s Steve Ross, Wallage, Colby Smith and Frankie Fraser of Shubenacadie. Harry Ross White (Noel Road) won the B Feature before running many main feature laps in the top five. A crash on the back straightaway ended the night for HOSS who had a strong #18 Archibald Drilling and Blasting Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

With the win, Colby Smith is now your Sportsman point leader over Mike Alexander. The Sportsman will go at it for another 30-lap main feature this Friday as apart of Fan Appreciation Night. Keep tabs of ScotiaSpeedworld.ca this week as we will have more from the Sportsman 100 and the Weekly Racing Series.

Until then, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track!
