SHRINER’S CLASSIC – SMITH ADDS NAME TO PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
After a few late cautions and many “hold your breath” moments in the closing laps of the 16th Annual Shriner’s Classic it was point leader Colby Smith from Cape Sable Island taking the victory in the 50-lap feature. Three time Classic winner and Speedworld veteran Terry Roma finished second while Chris Dingle scored his best Sportsman finish in third place. Roma, the fan favourite on the evening from West Chezzetcook, held the lead late in the race but it was Smith who piloted his Mood’s Transport/Harlow Construction Dodge Charger to the outside and around the #38 Doug Forbes Century 21 Classic Pontiac Grand Prix for the win. “It’s great to run with a great bunch of guys out here,” said Roma after climbing from his car. “This young man (Colby) can wheel a race car, he’s going places.” Roma also thanked his crew and the fans in the stands, which created some of the loudest cheers at the Speedworld on the evening.
Smith knew of the history of the race and was happy to add his name to the Shriner’s Classic trophy. “There’s a lot of big names on this trophy,” remarked Smith. “Terry’s name is on here three times and there’s guys on here that are racing in Pro Stock now. This is a big deal!” Smith will enjoy an over thirty point lead heading into Finale Friday on September 10th.
Elmsdale’s Chris Dingle rounded out the podium positions and was excited to come home with his best career finish in the division. “I’ve been waiting for a long time for this,” said Dingle after climbing from his #71 Sojourn Signs Chevrolet. Completing the top five on the evening was Wilmot’s Mike Banks, also with his best career Sportsman finish at the Speedworld and leading rookie in the class Mike Alexander of Cole Harbour, who will celebrate his 21st birthday on Tuesday.
Qualifying heat races were won by Halifax’s Tony Leonard and Noel Road’s Harry Ross White. The Sportsman boys will duke it out in the final point race of the season on September 10th, as part of Finale Weekend at Scotia Speedworld!
LEGENDS – MOORE SCORES FIRST FEATURE WIN
It was a special Saturday night at the Speedworld for Matt Moore as the Falmouth driver drove his #1 Hood’s Hardware Legend car to victory to capture his first feature victory at the 3/10-mile oval! Moore, who entered the night fifth in the point standings had to hold off a hard charging Steve Pye to take the victory. The Lantz driver made a late pass on “The Legend” Cy Harvey, relegating the #37 Harvey’s Racing Legend to third in the final running order. Port LaTour’s Jeff Atkinson came home with fourth while point leader Paul Blenkhorn of Truro completed the top five.
Atkinson and Salisbury, New Brunswick’s Kyle Campbell took ten lap heat race victories. It was an early night for Campbell, Ray Cox Jr. and second place point man Justin MacNeill as all three cars had to be towed off the track after a lap eight incident in turn one. The vice will tighten in the point standings at the top while Blenkhorn will extend his lead in the Legend class with just one event to go – making Finale Friday a must see event!
TIRECRAFT THUNDER – WARREN SCORES SECOND CONSECUTIVE VICTORY OF THE SEASON
It took nearly a season and a half for Matthew Warren of White’s Lake to score his first feature victory in the Tirecraft Thunder cars. The question was when would the next feature win come – the answer was the next time his #31 Markland Associates Civic hit the track. Warren took the lead early in the 25-lap feature and bested a hard charging Kyle MacMillan in the #5 Jaycan Ultramar Pipeline Civic from Hammonds Plains in the late going. MacMillan and third place finisher Stevie Lively (Shubenacadie) put on a fantastic battle for second as the drivers swapped the position many times in the closing laps. Tylor Hawes (Porter’s Lake) and Ross Harvie (Kennetcook) methodically made their way through traffic to finish fourth and fifth respectively.
Warren and Troy Bonin of Tantallon got the advantage in their ten lap heat races. With Lively’s second place feature finish combined with his heat finish, he will have a slim point lead over Hawes and Harvie heading into next weekend’s fifty lap finale for “the BEST four cylinder drivers in Atlantic Canada!”
TIRECRAFT LIGHTNING – SMITH BROTHERS DUEL IT OUT FOR VICTORY
In a race which seemed to be in the bag for Timberlea’s Trevor Smith, it was the Lakeside Smiths duelling it out for the victory with Jorden holding off a hard charging Russell for the victory. Jorden, who took his second feature of the season piloted his #194 DaBest Construction Neon to the victory as Russell rapidly closed the gap through the final couple of corners. Nick Hurshman of Lakeside completed the Smith Brothers Racing top three in his #145 Bernie’s Drywall Services Neon. Dan Michaud Jr and Craig Cordeau brought their Neons home to top five finishes.
Cordeau of Windsor brought home his sixth heat race victory of the season to kick off the night while Russell Smith Jr. took his seventh heat victory in the other ten lap qualifier. When the points are tallied and the cars hit the track this Friday for the Tirecraft 50 lap race, Russell Smith Jr. may only have to start the feature in order to clinch his second Tirecraft Lightning championship as he gained more points on Hurshman on Saturday night!
HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS – SEVENTH HEAVEN FOR BUTCHER
It has been a dream season for Cole Butcher. The Porter’s Lake driver scored his seventh feature victory this past Saturday night as he edged out second place driver Emily Meehan for the victory. “Miss Rawdon Rocket” kept pace with the #5 Atlantic Tiltload/Hope for Wildlife Bandolero but could not complete the pass on the point leader. Jarrett Butcher of Porter’s Lake grabbed third with leading freshman Luke Ettinger finishing fourth ahead of Cole Tanner, who was making his first start in the #33 SFR Racing Bandolero from Shubenacadie.
Meehan and Ettinger both came home with heat race triumphs. Butcher gained one point on the #15 Ocean Truck Equipment Bandolero with two races to go in the Summer of 2010.
