MEDIA RACE – BUBBERS BLOWS FIELD AWAY

Matt Bubbers of The Chronicle Herald went from getting his drivers license last year to standing atop the podium at Scotia Speedworld as the 2010 Media Race champ this past Friday night at the Speedworld. Not only did the Toronto, Ontario transplant lead all fifteen laps of the event, he took the field to school, lapping all but himself and second place runner Ted Hyland of KOOL 96.5FM. Bubbers, aboard the Ross Harvie owned #67 Rick’s Welding Honda and Hyland, who piloted the Scott Williams owned #00 Performance Edge/Cobb Co. Sign Design/Little Jo’s Pizza Honda were joined on the podium by Global Television’s Ray Bradshaw who wheeled the Stephen Morrell #50 Scotia Salvage/Scotia Signs Honda to third. Completing the top five was Kyle MacMillian’s #5 Jaycan Ultramar Pipeline Civic of Pat Healey from the Weekly Press and Drew MacEachern’s #13 Martime Fleet Services Civic driven by 89.9HAL FM’s Geoff Walsh.

The race featured one yellow flag which set up a green-white-checker finish to the event. Thanks to his win, Bubbers pocketed $1,000 for his charity - the Nova Scotia SPCA. Congrats to Matt and a big thank you to all the drivers, teams and media personalities who took part in the successful event!

HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS – BUTCHER STARTS TO FILL SECOND HAND WITH SIXTH WIN

When it comes to feature wins, Cole Butcher will now have to use his second hand to count those that he has won in 2010. Butcher drove his #5 Atlantic Tiltload/Hope for Wildlife Bandolero car to his sixth feature triumph of the season as he led his brother Jarrett in car #3 for a sweep of the top two positions. The Porter’s Lake drivers were followed to the line by “Miss Rawdon Rocket” Emily Meehan in third following a spirited run from the rear to the front in the #15 Ocean Truck Equipment Limited Bandolero. Completing the top five on Media Night included Kennetcook’s Luke Ettinger and Shubenacadie’s Braden Langille.

In the qualifying heat races it was Ettinger and Meehan pocketing victories. Cole Butcher’s point lead is now thirteen points over Meehan heading into the Saturday Night Special this Saturday evening.

TIRECRAFT LIGHTNING – HURSHMAN WINS THRILLER

In a 20-lap feature that saw lots of green flag running and side-by-side racing, it was a two lap dash and a photo finish that decided the winner of the Tirecraft Lightning main feature on Friday. Timberlea’s Trevor Smith led a majority of the laps in the event as the top point drivers made their way to the front of the field and with a caution on lap eighteen, a green-white-checker finish would be set up. Second place point driver Nick Hurshman (Lakeside) started outside of Trevor Smith and the two went door-to-door for the final 3/5-mile with Hurshman edging out Smith by a nose! Both drivers had big smiles on their faces after emerging from their Dodge Neons and were quick to congratulate each other on their finishes! Point leader Russell Smith Jr. (Lakeside) finished third while Hantsport’s John Poan and Bedford’s Richie Moore rounded out the top five.

Russell Smith Jr. now has a forty-six point lead with two races to go in the 2010 season. He also took home a heat race win on Friday night along with Poan.

TRUCKS – RITCHIE DOUBLES DOWN, INCHES CLOSER TO CHAMPIONSHIP

Gordon Ritchie did exactly what he had to do on Friday to extend his slim point lead in the Truck class – and that was win! The Antrim driver took the victory in the heat race and then in the feature, completing the double down and extending his point lead to eleven points. Dan Smith (Lower Sackville) had a great night, coming home with two second place finishes on the evening while JP Arsenault (Church Point) was awarded third in the feature following technical inspection. Enfield’s Curtis Lindsay and Antrim’s Vernon Brown followed the top three across the stripe.

The Trucks now have two events to go and with two trucks only separated by eleven points, the championship battle will be going down to the wire to determine an inaugural champion!

LEGENDS – PYE SCORES THIRD FEATURE WIN OF SEASON

Steve Pye put his #6 Payless Automotive Legend car out front on Friday night and scored his third feature win of the season. It wasn’t easy though as Pye had to hold off former Canadian champs Justin MacNeill (Bedford) and “The Legend” Cy Harvey (Enfield). Ray Cox Jr. (Porter’s Lake) was charging to the front of the field in his #55 but had to settle for fourth ahead of point leader Paul Blenkhorn of Truro.

Center Burlington’s Richard Salter scored his first heat race victory with Pye completing the double down by winning the second heat race on Friday. With the successful night, Pye will close within 23-points of point leader Blenkhorn with two events to go in the Weekly Racing Series Legends division.

Meanwhile, the Maritime League of Legends Tour ran a fifty lap event prior to the Lucas Oil 100 on Saturday night. Steve Pye once again showed muscle in the event but was challenged lap after lap by MacNeill and Cox Jr., who finished second and third respectively behind Pye. The three ran nose-to-tail for many laps prior to the checkered flag falling. For more information on the Maritime League of Legends, visit MaritimeLegends.ca!

SPORTSMAN – BOUTILIER STEALS VICTORY WITH LAST LAP PASS

Halifax’s Tony Leonard has come so close so many times this season in the Sportsman division. If luck was on his side, the #74 Leonard’s Towing Toyota Camry could easily have three or more feature wins on his side this season. Instead, Leonard was in search of his first feature win of the season on Friday and looked to have it in hand for most of the 30-lap feature until a caution flew within ten laps to go. That put Porter’s Lake driver Aaron Boutilier and West Chezzetcook’s Terry Roma around Leonard and when the green flag flew, the race was on. When the checkers dropped it was Boutilier’s #4 Boutilier’s Auto Bosy/Baltas Automotive Ford edging the Toyota of Leonard for the win. Terry Roma came home in third with Harry Ross White (Noel Road) and point leader Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island), who was sporting a Dodge Charger on Friday night coming home with top five finishes.

Boutilier completed the double down by winning his heat with Windsor’s Fred Schofield taking honors in the first ten-lap qualifier. Smith now leads rookie Mike Alexander by twenty-one points heading into the fifty-lap Shriner’s Classic, apart of the Saturday Night Special.
