Race Report - Kiddie Night presented by The Chronicle Herald

With two point races to go, the boys and girls of the Weekly Racing Series were ready to attack the track once again before the curtain begins to close on the ’09 season. It was also the ever popular Kiddie Night, where the kids were treated to Kiddie Rides as well as giveaways throughout the night from Darkside Racing (Drew MacEachern #13 Thunder), Hella’s Diner/Boulton Racing (Kyle Gammon #98 Thunder) included in with our weekly giveaways from Pepsi and Miller Tire!

SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLERO DIVISION

Prospect Road’s DJ Casey came in to Kiddie Night looking to bite into the twelve point lead accumulated by point leader Brad Eddy (Lower Sackville) if he wanted to have a good shot at trying to grab the lead away from Eddy on Finale Friday. He did just that by winning the main feature on Kiddie Night and finishing second in his heat race, one spot better than Eddy. In the main feature Casey had a big battle on his hands with last season’s champ Dylan Blenkhorn closing in during the late laps but it wasn’t enough to take the lead away from the ’06 champ. Meanwhile, Eddy finished behind Blenkhorn to finish third after gaining the position from ’07 champ Shelby Baker (Fall River) in the late stages of the 15-lap affair. “Miss Rawdon Rocket” Emily Meehan also put on a strong performance as she was nipping at the heels of a podium finish but settled for fifth on lap fifteen.

The event also featured the debut of 10-year old Megan Parrott (Beaverbank). Fans know Megan’s father well as Brian has been a veteran of the Miller Tire Lightning class for many years. Winning the heat races on Friday were Cole Butcher (Porters Lake) and Braden Langille (Shubenacadie), who picked up his first win since joining the division in August driving the #0 Velocity Machining and Welding Bandolero car. Did we mention he is only eight years old?!

Eddy now only has a seven point advantage on DJ Casey heading into “Finale Friday.” With Casey gaining five points last week, it is bound to be close as the final checkered flag in the division is set to fall on Friday night!

MILLER TIRE LIGHTNING DIVISION

For a long time on Friday night during the Lightning main, it looked as if we were going to have a first time feature winner. Jorden Smith (Lakeside) is our leading rookie in the class while John Poan (Hantsport) had his #173 Jennie’s Photography Neon dialed in on Kiddie Night. The two battled for many laps at the front until Dan Michaud Jr. (Cole Harbour) made his presence known as he navigated his #119 R&R Kinsman Auto Salvage Neon to the lead position and to the win in the 20-lap feature. Jorden Smith came home in the two spot followed by Poan, Cody Singer (North Noel Road) and Kevin Robar (Sackville).

In heat action, it was Poan and Singer putting down wins in the 10-lap events. Friday is the final race of the season for the Lightning cars and with Michaud Jr. having a big lead over Russell Smith Jr. (Lakeside), the #119 will look to bring the car home in one piece and with a big piece of hardware from the banquet come October!

MILLER TIRE THUNDER DIVISION

Dave Matthews is familiar with the exciting finishes that come with the Miller Tire Thunder class and has come out on both sides of battles for victory in the class. He had to do the same this week as he ended up had to try to hold off the rest of the field for a one lap shootout in the main feature. On the lap twenty-five re-start the Kennetcook driver drove back to the lead over second place driver Kyle MacMillan and took away the victory in his #99 Chapman Auto Body Civic. MacMillan crossed the line in second but due to a post race technical infraction involving camber on the right front wheel was relegated to last on the grid. Tim Tanner (Northern Beaverbank), who won his first main feature one week ago, was credited with second, ahead of point leader Derek MacCallum (Lower Sackville), Kyle Gammon (Middle Sackville), and Ross Harvie (Kennetcook).

Heat winners on Kiddie Night were Troy Bonin (Tantallon), Harvie and Gary Withenshaw (Middle Sackville). MacCallum should be able to lock up the Thunder title this Friday night by starting the main feature as he currently possesses a sixty-five point advantage over Matthews. Remember though, this is the sport of stock car racing and anything can happen! Be sure to check it out on Friday night.

LOCKHART TRUCK CENTER HOBBY STOCK DIVISION

As with the Bandoleros, the Hobby Stock point battle tightened on Friday evening as the Ritchie brothers made the margin closer on Kiddie Night at the track. Wayne, the rookie of the two brothers from Coldstream put his #82 CARQUEST Mustang back into Victory Lane, doubling down to take maximum points on the evening. It wasn’t easy for Wayne though as he was pursued late race by two-time Hobby Stock champ Mark Wilson (Lantz). Wilson won his heat race on the evening and looked like he was set for his first feature triumph before Ritchie closed the advantage. Vernon Brown (Antrim) was also involved in the battle for the lead but when all was said and done, it was Bug Turple (Enfield) taking third followed by Ben Sheehy (Stewiacke) and Gordon Ritchie (Antrim).

With Wayne’s win and Gordon’s fifth place finish, that makes the battle in the points tighter – to four points in fact between Gordon in first and Wayne in second. Can the Truck win the first year in the Hobby Stock class or can Wayne and his Mustang spoil the party and become the first rookie champion since Russell Smith Jr. pulled the feat in Lightning in 2006? Find out on Finale Friday for all the answers!

C&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN DIVISION

Steve Ross laid out his plan of attack for the evening’s racing card during his Kiddie Rides interview – win his heat and if he had a decent starting spot in the feature to go out and win that. Mr. Ross is a man of his word as he did just what he planned to on Friday night by doubling down in his #24 Speedy Auto Service Tacoma Drive Chevrolet Impala SS in front of a great crowd! Ross, seventh in points coming into the event needed a great showing to keep himself within striking distance of the leader heading into the event. Ross (Waverley) crossed the line in front of another championship contender Jeff Dillman (Musquodoboit). “HOSS” (Harry Ross White, Noel Road) finished third followed by Aaron Boutilier (Porters Lake) and point leader Terry Roma (West Chezzetcook) in the highly competitive 35-lap event!

Wins in the heat races went to Ross and Sheldon Pemberton (Dartmouth). The point picture was shaken up on Friday with Roma only holding an eight point advantage on Dillman. Seven drivers sit within thirty eight points of Roma and with each position in the main being worth two more points than the next, this could the most exciting 25-lap feature on Friday night that we’ve seen in years! Will it be Roma, Dillman, Aaron Boutilier, Ross, Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island), Leonard Boutiler (Dutch Settlement) or Darren Wallage (Oakfield) being crowed the ’09 champ? Find out on Friday evening!

This Friday evening has racing in all six of our Weekly Divisions as they will crown titlists for ’09. With four divisions point battles within eight points it is set up to be an epic battle for the big trophies! Then, on Saturday it is the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour crowning a champion with the Maritime League of Legends Tour running their second last point race of the season. Did we mention J.R. Fitzpatrick (Cambridge, ONT) will be in both Legend races on the weekend? It is going to be one weekend of racing you WILL NOT want to miss!r their 15-lap feature to support the Triple 50’s.
