Tims Corner - Spud 100UPDATE! Update – After the checkered flag flew on Saturday evening, the verdict came down from Oyster Bed officials that the #11 car did not fully pass technical inspection following the Sportsman 100, which would give the win to Grand Barachois, N.B.’s Claude Gaudet. My article was written on Sunday morning and I was just made aware of the decision early in the week. I apologize for any inconvenience the piece may have caused. VEINOTTE RACES WAY TO FIRST FEATURE WIN ON PEI Porter’s Lake’s Jordan Veinotte came up to me prior to the final practice session of the day at Oyster Bed Speedway on Sunday and told me that he had a fast race car. This comes as no surprise to Scotia Speedworld fans though as Jordan can be found on Friday nights near the front of the field during the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman main features. He showed the fans of PEI as well as he was a top five car in Time Trials, which would position him in the top half of the field for the 100 lap Sportsman race. The Veinotte’s Truck and Auto Ford Fusion was solid during the first quarter of the race as he made his way to the front of the field. He and Speedway 660 regular Brent Roy put on a great battle for second before something let go on the ServiceMaster Camry, sidelining the “Camry Kid” for the rest of the afternoon. Veinotte then went to work as he put his #11 into the lead shortly after the lap 25 restart and never looked back as the race ran green to the end – leaving only three cars on the lead lap as Veinotte laid his claim up front! Veinotte celebrated in turn two before coming back to the flagstand area to receive a great ovation from the fans in attendance! “I was running out of brakes in the last fifty laps and I may have burnt the clutch out doing the burnout but we got the win,” Veinotte said as he rolled his car down pit road following the race. Congratulations to the whole Veinotte Motorsports team on the victory in PEI, something that is sure to give them some momentum heading into 2010 at Scotia Speedworld! SMITH CONTINUES STRONG SOPHOMORE SEASON ON THE ISLAND What a season Colby Smith has had! Though he hasn’t found a main feature win, Smith has picked up some heat race glory at Scotia Speedworld and a few strong runs led to podium finishes en route to a fourth place finish in Scotia’s points. But, he’s far from done with 2009 and that showed on Sunday as Smith showed the Island contingent on Sunday. Smith put up a second place time on the board during Time Trials and finished second in the Dash which eventually would turn in to the pole for the feature after the re-draw. Smith ran up front all race long and led a handful of laps in the early going but as the long green flag run wore on, Smith slipped back through the pack as he finished in the top five after 100-laps! The strong run by the Cape Sable Island driver will only put a little more momentum behind him as he will look to defend his home turf at Lake Doucette Motor Speedway on October 17th as apart of the Murray GM Sportsman 150. Smith is a former 4-cylinder champ at the track. OTHER SCOTIA DRIVERS MAKE TRIP TO SPORTSMAN 100 AT OBS Besides Smith and Veinotte putting in solid runs in the top five, they were joined by Sportsman veteran Leonard Boutilier in the top five. The Dutch Settlement driver is making a move to the Pro Stock ranks next year and got some valuable seat time at one of the tracks the CARQUEST Tour visits every season. We expect to see him in a couple of weeks at the CENTRE for Speed in his Alpine Auto Glass Impala – a track where he finished top three last year in his Sackville Trenching/Canadian Tire Chevrolet Impala Sportsman car! Also making the trip Saturday to the Island were Steve Ross (Waverly), Fred Schofield (Windsor) and Dale Richardson (Stellerton) along with casual Speedworld visitors Scott Allen (Antigonish) and Kevin MacLean (Antigonish). …OH, AND THERE WAS ONE MORE! Lower Sackville’s Derek MacCallum was also apart of the festivities at Oyster Bed Speedway on Saturday. MacCallum and his back to back championship winning #16 True North Diner Honda Civic ran apart of the 4-cylinder Invitational race and once again showed that Scotia Speedworld has some of the best drivers in Atlantic Canada by coming home in third. It wasn’t easy though as MacCallum had to go through the infield to avoid a wreck on the back straightaway and somehow after flinging through the red mud in the infield came back out on track with only being one position behind from where he was before the incident! MacCallum was making up time in the corners but the other racecars seemed to have a bit more steam down the straights, making for an exciting race for the fans! There was also racing which featured Legends and Sportsman at Riverglade Speedway just outside of Moncton, New Brunswick. Some of our local guys did attend but I was not present and will have more news on how the Scotia drivers faired later on! Coming up later this week – more trivia and your chance to enter to win a prize or two at the end of the season as well as the Sojourn Signs Bandolero Season in Review, it’s all here at ScotiaSpeedworld.ca! Until then, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track! |
