Race Report - SHRINER’S CLASSICC&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN
It took Jeff Dillman nearly a season and a half to chalk up his first feature win in the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman division. The next question was how long it would take the sophomore driver from Middle Musquodoboit to win another? The answer? Five days. Not only that, it was in one of the biggest Sportsman races of the season – the 15th annual Shriner’s Classic! Dillman, Leonard Boutilier (Dutch Settlement) and Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake) put on a spirited battle at the front and when it was all said and done, Dillman powered his Chevrolet Impala sponsored by Absolute Traffic Services to victory in the special 35-lap event. On a restart with just a handful of laps to go, the high line checked up, allowing Dillman and others to get past to battle for the lead. Dillman held off the competition in his #08 ride to take the win over Aaron Boutilier and Leonard Boutilier. Three time Shriner’s Classic champ Terry Roma (West Chezzetcook) brought his #38 Doug Forbes Century 21 Classic Pontiac Grand Prix home in fourth followed by Rick Ackles. Leonard Boutilier and Speedworld vet Larry Fisher (Porter’s Lake) won the qualifying heats for the main event which saw 21-cars start! With the win, Dillman will inherit the Sportsman point lead. The Sportsman Division will run apart of Atlantic CAT 250 weekend upcoming with the running of the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman 100! LEGENDS The battle on the racetrack between the Legends front runners was one of the best we’ve seen all season in the division and it was between the “Legend” and the “Rookie” as Cy Harvey (Elmsdale) and Neil Stewart (Truro) traded the lead back and forth during the 25-lap feature. In the end, it was “The Legend” doubling down to take yet another main feature to add to his impressive resume in the division. Stewart, the former Sportsman driver turned Legend driver, finished a close second with Bedford’s Justin MacNeill coming home in third. MacNeill held off Falmouth’s Matt Moore and Bedford’s Ed Hayden as they came home in fourth and fifth, respectively. Former Hobby champ Mark Whynot (Eastern Passage) and Harvey won the heats in the division. The Legends will return to the track on August 14th for Fan Appreciation Night presented by Q104! LOCKHART TRUCK CENTER HOBBY STOCK In a race that saw three and four wide racing early, the Ritchies broke away from the rest of the field – though it wasn’t Gordon on top! Gordon chased the rookie driving the CARQUEST Mustang to the line in the 25-lap event as Coldstream’s Wayne Ritchie won his first ever main feature in the class. Gordon had a run to the outside in his Ritchie’s Renovations S-10 in the final laps but it wasn’t enough to nip Wayne. Two time division champ Mark Wilson (Lantz) finally put the bad luck behind him and finished third followed by Ben Sheehy (Stewiacke) and Richie Moore (Bedford). Heat wins went to the two ¼-ton trucks of Vernon Brown (Antrim) and Gordon Ritchie (Antrim). The action will heat up in the division once again in two weeks, on August 14th! MILLER TIRE THUNDER The best four cylinder drivers in the Maritimes once again brought over 30 cars to the racetrack to attempt to qualify for their 25-lap main feature. All season, the Boulton Racing #16 (Derek MacCallum, Lower Sackville) and #98 (Kyle Gammon, Middle Sackville) cars have dominated in the win column – until Shriner’s Classic Night. Kennetcook’s Dave Matthews has been closing in on that elusive win all season and finally, the #99 Chapman Auto Body Civic broke through for the victory, winning the feature presented by Miller Tire! Matthews topped Gammon and MacCallum for the win as Rawdon’s Jeremy Hallett got the best of Kyle MacMillan (Hammonds Plains) for fourth. MacMillan led the most laps in the main feature in a solid run for the #5. Heats were taken away by MacMillan, Afton’s Dan Delorey and Northern Beaverbank’s Tim Tanner. After a rough week on AMP Energy Day, Ross Harvie broke through and won the “B” Feature, holding off Jason Morash (Lakeside), Scott Williams (Middle Sackville), Robbie Watts (Lucasville) and Scott O’Neill (Enfield). The four cylinder Hondas will be back on track August 21st for C&R Auto Supply Presents Ken Schrader at Scotia Speedworld! SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLEROS One of the most competitive Sojourn Signs Bandolero races of the year took place on Shriner’s Classic Night as once again, it looked to be the battle of the top drivers in points as Brad Eddy (Lower Sackville), DJ Casey (Prospect Road) and Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro) made their way through the field during the race while Shelby Baker (Fall River) and Ryan Mackintosh (Amherst) battled it out in front for the lead. Baker, who had yet to win this season, put the pressure heavy on Mackintosh, who was attempting to win his second feature in his sophomore season! In the end, the two front runners made contact which sent the rest of the field scurrying around the spinning vehicles. DJ Casey came out with the lead but on the laps following the restart it was the Sojourn Signs #1 Bandolero car putting the hammer down and eventually taking the victory in the 15-lap feature! Eddy was followed to the line by Casey, Brad Bevan (Sackville), Emily Meehan (Rawdon) and defending track champ Dylan Blenkhorn! Heats on the evening were won by Mackintosh and Bevan. The young guns of Scotia Speedworld return to the track on August 14th! THUNDER NEWS Congratulations go out to Northern Beaverbank’s Tim Tanner, who won a 35-lap invitational event at the Centre for Speed in Grand-Barachois, N.B. on Sunday afternoon. Tanner is having a great season in his May Garden/Pothier Motors Civic in Nova Scotia, but his first main feature win in ’09 came in New Brunswick! Kyle Gammon (Hella’s Diner/Daynite Signs Civic) finished third in a race that also featured the Fan’s Chinese Restaurant Civic of Robbie Watts! Great run guys!
