Race Report - AMP ENERGY DAY
After rain washed out Friday’s Weekly Racing Series program sponsored by AMP Energy, the decision was made to push the weekly show ahead to Sunday afternoon. Mother Nature cooperated in a big way as we had a beautiful day for racing at Scotia Speedworld! SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLERO DIVISION This season has seemed to be a tilt between Lower Sackville’s Brad Eddy and Prospect Road’s DJ Casey with a majority of race wins going to the two drivers. Eddy entered AMP Energy Day as the point leader with Casey running a tight third behind the ’07 champ Shelby Baker (Fall River). These three drivers, along with ’08 track titlist Dylan Blenkhorn put on a show for the crowd on Sunday afternoon with the Never Greener #8 Bandolero hitting its groove and DJ Casey driving it to victory, doubling down by winning his heat and the 15-lap main feature! Eddy, Baker and Blenkhorn battled right down to the wire for second, third and fourth with car #1 nipping the #01 and #14 respectively for the positions. Cole Butcher (Porter’s Lake) came home in fifth place in the feature after winning his heat race on a hot Sunday afternoon at Scotia! Casey credited the competition after his win on Sunday afternoon. “Shelby, Brad, Dylan – everyone on this track is great to race with! I got a great cheering section up there (in the stands) and hopefully we can win another one next week,” said Casey following his Victory Lap! Also making his debut in the Sojourn Signs Bandolero class this week was 8 year old Braden Langille. The youngster from Shubenacadie drives the #0 Velocity Machining and Welding Bandolero car which looks strikingly similar to Shawn Turple’s #0 Dexter Contruction/Municipal Group Impala on the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour. The connection? Braden’s dad (Craig Langille) is the spotter on the Pro Stock #0! Be sure to watch Braden and his other Bandolero buddies this week as Scotia Speedworld hits the track for Shriners Classic Night at Scotia Speedworld! MILLER TIRE LIGHTNING DIVISION After an ultra exciting 50-lapper last week presented by Miller Tire, the Lightning cars were back on course for their 20-lap main feature. Once again, Nick Hurshman (Lakeside) put his Bernie’s Drywall #145 Neon out in front of the field and looked poised to take his first main feature win on Sunday afternoon as the other front runners had to pick their way through traffic to get to the bumper of the yellow Dodge. Instead, it was another Neon nipping Hurshman for the feature win – Dan Michaud, Jr.! Michaud (cole Harbour) worked his #119 R&R Kinsman Auto Salvage Neon through the tight competition in the Lightning division to the front and eventually dueled side by side with Hurshman for the win in the main event. Hurshman settled for second as Dan Smith (Sackville) wrestled his #112 Discount Movers Pontiac up to third at the end of the race. Cousins Russell Smith Jr. (Lakeside) and Trevor Smith (Timberlea) finished out the top five in the feature. Michaud had the biggest smile on his face after the race. “Anytime you beat those Smith boys it’s big. They’re tough every week,” the point leader told the crowd after he won the main feature. Heats in the division were taken away by Trevor Smith and 2008 titlist Andrew Starks (Truro)! The Lightning division will be back during Fan Appreciation Night Presented by Q104 in a couple weeks time! MILLER TIRE THUNDER DIVISION Thirty-two cars took green to attempt to qualify for the Miller Tire Thunder main feature on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the stock car oval in Enfield. It looked like Kennetcook’s Dave Matthews would finally break the Boulton Racing stranglehold on the division until Middle Sackville’s Kyle Gammon tore up through the field and to the lead, beating Dave by a half car length at the finish of the 25-lap main! While the two battled for the lead, Derek MacCallum (Lower Sackville) quietly made his way up to third at the end of the feature, beating Middle Sackville’s Scott Williams and Dartmouth’s Drew MacEachern, who each posted season high finishes in the main feature! Heat races were won by Afton’s John Delorey, Williams and Gammon. Lakeside’s Jason Morash won the “B” Feature to qualify for the main, besting Afton’s Dan Delorey and Eddie Rector of Merigomish. Robbie Watts (Lucasville) was pushed to fourth in the main feature by Jon Bonin (Glen Haven) in a great display of driving by both the #55 and #8 cars. Beijing, China’s Bruce Buntain (formerly from the Annapolis Valley) drove his first stock car race at Scotia Speedworld in the #69 OK Tire Civic on Sunday, driving to a close second in his heat before breaking in the feature. Check Tim’s Corner this week on ScotiaSpeedworld.ca for more on Buntain! The Thunders will be part of Shriner’s Classic Night this Friday evening at Scotia Speedworld – be there to see if Derek MacCallum can extend his points lead on the rest of the field starting at 7pm! LOCKHART TRUCK CENTER HOBBY STOCK DIVISION In a feature that had thrills and spills for some of our top runners, Gordon Ritchie continued his solid run in the division as the driver from Antrim drove his Ritchie Renovations S-10 to victory in the 25-lap event. Wayne Ritchie (Coldstream) posted yet another runner up finish in the #82 CARQUEST Mustang as Richie Moore (Bedford) rounded out the top three after the main feature. Two time champ Mark Wilson (Lantz) and Ben Sheehy (Stewiacke) rounded out the top five which saw fireworks in the corner between top runners in the division Brandon and Bryan Watson (Windsor Junction) and Terry Moore (Shubenacadie). Gordon Ritchie and Vernon Brown (Antrim), who was driving his ¼ ton truck in only his second race meet, won the heat races. Eric Neilsen (Enfield) also brought out his new Ford Ranger race truck on the afternoon, finishing sixth on the afternoon! Ritchie will have the point lead firmly in his hands as we head to Friday nights Shriners Classic show at Scotia Speedworld! LEGENDS A long green flag run in the main feature of the Legends division looked like it was going to be rookie Tony Gaudet, Jr. (Milford Station) doubling down to win his first ever main feature but it wasn’t meant to be. After Gaudet led the most laps of the feature, it was Geoff Bevan (Sackville) passing the #36 past the halfway mark to take the lead. It then looked like Bevan was going to pilot his Tom’s Family Restaurant #43 to victory until a caution bunched up the first and put Scott MacLean’s #61 Maritime Auto Supply Legend on the outside driven by Truro’s Bruce Johnson on the afternoon. Bruce then muscled the #61 past the #43 to the win. Bevan was second followed closely by the Stewart Auto Repair and Accessories #24 of rookie Neil Stewart (Truro) for third. Bedford’s Justin MacNeill and Ray Cox Jr. from Porter’s Lake rounded out the top five. Heats in the division were taken away by rookie Gaudet Jr. and “The Legend” Cy Harvey. The Legends are once again in action this Friday night! C&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN DIVISION In a feature that saw many of our front point runners having problems and making charges to the front of the field, sophomore Jeff Dillman (Middle Musquodoboit) finally put his #08 Absolute Traffic Control Chevrolet Impala into victory lane after 35-laps of grueling competition! Dillman was chased down by veteran Harry Ross White (Noel Road), who had to work to put together the engine in the #18 Vance Hanes Auto Parts Chevrolet to get it to the track on Sunday! Following Dillman and HOSS to the line were Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake), Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island) and last season’s champ Terry Roma (West Chezzetcook). Qualifying heats were won by Windsor’s Fred Schofield and Porter’s Lake Jordan Veinotte, who also had to put a new engine in his Veinotte’s Truck and Auto Ford Fusion on Thursday night for the Sunday show! The Sportsman will compete in the 15th Annual Shriners Classic this Friday night at Scotia Speedworld with former champions Terry Roma (’97, ’04, ’05) and defending champion of the race Harry Ross White (’00, ’08) trying to fend off the rest of the field. With the names like Slaunwhite (Troy and Craig), Tibert (Ron and Mel), Gordie Ryan, Tony Leonard, James Graves and Sheldon Pemberton on the past champs list, the Classic is one of the biggest races on the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman schedule. Racing gets underway at 7pm on Friday night! Until then, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track! |
