Race Report - Miller Tire Night

SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLERO DIVISION

He’s won in Connecticut. He’s won in New York and now Amherst’s Ryan Mackintosh can say that he’s won at his home track in Nova Scotia! The youngster “doubled down” on Friday evening to take away his first ever main feature win at Scotia Speedworld! Though Mackintosh looked strong on Friday night, he was under heavy pressure from former track champs Shelby Baker (Fall River) and Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro) on a restart with just a couple of laps to go. In the end, Mackintosh held off Baker and Blenkhorn in a hard fought battle for the top spots as Cole Butcher (Porter’s Lake) followed them to the line in front of kart standout Josh Yeomans (Halifax), who was making his first start in a Bandolero filling in for Brad Bevan (#43, Sackville).

Heats were won by Mackintosh and Baker. Point leaders Brad Eddy (Lower Sackville) and DJ Casey (Prospect Road) were involved in an incident with a couple of laps left, miring the cars back in the pack. The points could be shaken up as we head forward to AMP Energy night at Scotia Speedworld on Friday!

MILLER TIRE LIGHTNING DIVISION

Once again, the Miller Tire Lightning class showed they can provide some big excitement on the track as they attacked Scotia Speedworld for their fifty lap event on Friday night presented by Miller Tire. It looked like the Smith Brothers Racing team would be sweeping the podium for most of the race but the field got dicey in the last few laps and when lead lap and lap down cars went scattering in turn two, defending Miller Tire 50 champ Russell Smith Jr. (Lakeside) threaded the needle through the calamity to take the lead and the main feature win! The Timberlea Beverage Room Cavalier came through the field from the back to take the win as his two teammates in Neons, Nick Hurshman (Lakeside) and brother Jorden Smith (Lakeside), waged war for the lead most of the feature! When the dust settled, Jorden got second behind brother Russell with Dan Smith (Beaverbank) getting by for third, in front of Dan Michaud Jr. (Cole Harbour) and Hurshman.

Michaud Jr., had to rally back to fourth following a scary incident with Craig Cordeau (Windsor) on the back straight during the 50-lapper, which saw the back end of the #199 Jennie’s Photography Neon destroyed by Michaud’s #119 R&R Kinsman Auto Salvage Neon. Both drivers were alright after the wreck, which included John Poan (Hantsport).

Heat races were won by defending track champ Andrew Starks (Truro) and Michaud Jr. The point battle tightened as a result of the Miller Tire 50, be there Friday as the drivers try to settle another feature in the Miller Tire Lightning class!

MILLER TIRE THUNDER DIVISION

A picture says a thousand words, or so they say. I’m sure after Friday night, Derek MacCallum (Lower Sackville) and Kyle Gammon (Middle Sackville) could agree with that statement. The two came across the line at the exact instance after fifty laps in the feature presented by Miller Tire. Some in the crowd thought the checkered flag should go to Gammon, others thought it was MacCallum taking the checkers first, but when the decision came from upstairs it was Kyle Gammon bagging his third feature win of ’09. MacCallum was awarded second place after a rough night which saw him hit the wall hard after contact with Enfield’s Scott O’Neill in the heat race. Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) rebounded from a tough week to put the Chapman Auto Body #99 in third place followed by Nick Church (Shubenacadie) in Jeremy Hallett’s (Rawdon) backup car and East Dover’s Matt Scott.

In qualifying action Church, Brandon Crawford (Sackville), and Gammon took the checkers in the heats while MacCallum rebounded for the “B” Feature win in front of Blaine Nicholson (Timberlea), who was filling in for Kevin Clark Jr., and Gary Withenshaw (Middle Sackville). The best four cylinder drivers in the Maritimes are back on track this Friday night for racing presented by AMP Energy at Scotia Speedworld.

LOCKHART TRUCK CENTER HOBBY STOCK DIVISION

Quick and caution free was the story of the Miller Tire 50 for the Hobby Stocks. Gordon Ritchie (Antrim) took the lead of the race within the first dozen laps and ran away with the main feature in his #26 Ritchie’s Renovations Chevrolet S-10. Bryan Watson (Windsor Junction) looked to be reeling in Ritchie, but ran out of time in the incident free event to catch the truck in front of him. Finishing behind Gordon and Bryan were Wayne Ritchie (Coldstream), Brandon Watson (Windsor Junction) and Richie Moore (Bedford) in the highly competitive event which saw another truck make its debut – the new #93 ride with Hobby Stock regular Vernon Brown behind the wheel!

Heats on the night went to Bug Turple (Enfield), who was making his first start in a former Watson racecar and Mark Wilson (Lantz), who triumphed for the first time in a rough and tumble ’09 season for the former two time champ! The Hobby Stockers will be back in action this week as they continue to push on towards the 2009 Championship at Scotia Speedworld!

C&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN DIVISION

We want to send out congratulations to our C&R Auto Supply Sportsman point leader Darren Wallage (Oakfield) who won the shortened NAPA 100 race on Friday night at Riverside International Speedway. Scotia regulars Harry Ross White (Noel Road) and Kirk Ryan (Enfield) bagged second and fifth place honors in the event while former Sportsman champ and part timer James Graves (Berwick) took third. Competitors from all over the Maritimes took part in the Friday night event supporting the IWK 250 presented by Steve Lewis Auto Body. Way to go guys!

This Friday at Scotia Speedworld is AMP Energy night which will see action from the Miller Tire Thunder and Lightning, Lockhart Truck Center Hobby Stock, Sojourn Signs Bandolero and Legend classes. The fun all gets underway at 7pm on Friday, July 24th!

That’s all for now. Until this Friday night, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track!
