Race Report - SHRINER’S CLASSICC&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN
Our Weekly Racing Series boys and girls were off this weekend, except for the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman as the Atlantic CAT 250 weekend was centre stage at Scotia Speedworld last weekend. For more information on the Atlantic CAT 250 itself, check out MaritimeProStockTour.com and my article later in the week on the race – dubbed by some as the best 250 seen at the facility in a long time! The big boys that race Weekly at Scotia Speedworld were the stars on Saturday as the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman raced in a 100-lap feature presented by their division sponsor as an appetizer to the Atlantic CAT 250. The boys brought the heat and with 28 cars on track to start the main feature the action was never ending! On Friday during qualifying it was Troy Slaunwhite (Terence Bay), former Sportsman titlist James Graves (Berwick) and series veteran Tony Mason (Dutch Settlement) taking heat wins and the top three starting spots for the 100! Each win was big as Troy was running in his former car currently owned by the Niles family of Truro and driven by Brandon Niles. Graves is a former champ only doing a part time schedule of the big events of 2009 and for Tony Mason it was his first win this season and a much appreciated one by the sound of the crowd as the Jim Richards Boom Truck Pontiac took the checkers around Scotia Speedworld! When the feature went green on Saturday it was Graves and Slaunwhite swapping paint up front for the lead as the front runners made their way to the front. Leonard Boutilier (Dutch Settlement) was charging to the front of the field and was one of the strongest cars mid-way through the event until he lost control of his Canadian Tire/Sackville Trenching Impala on the front straightaway while racing hard for the lead with Slaunwhite. The spin triggered a multi-car wreck, taking early race favorites including Boutilier, Graves, Kirk Ryan (Enfield) and Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island) among others. Heavy favorites Terry Roma (West Chezzetcook) and Harry Ross White (Noel Road) fell to the wayside following separate incidents, taking them out of contention in the longest Sportsman race of the season. In the end, it came down to Slaunwhite and Darren Wallage up front on a late restart following a scary incident which saw Tony Mason destroy an eight-foot piece of wall on the front straight. Mason emerged O.K. from the incident. When the race resumed, Wallage put his Kirk Heating Limited Camry out front for good and not only won his first race of 2009 at Scotia Speedworld – but the biggest race of his career! Slaunwhite settled for second with Dartmouth’s Sheldon Pemberton coming home third. Steve Ross (Waverley) and series point leader Jeff Dillman (Musquodoboit) rounded out the top five with defending race champ Frankie Fraser coming home in sixth! |
