RACE REPORT – C&R AUTO SUPPLY NIGHT

On a night where stock car racing legend Ken Schrader (Fenton, MO) was visiting Scotia Speedworld and racing in the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman 50 every lap of action was exciting and each of the divisions racing on the evening had interesting storylines to follow as they raced in front of a great crowd!

SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLEROS

Brad Eddy and DJ Casey have had the most success this season in the Bandolero class as they occupy the top two spots in the standings. The two were close once again as they headed into C&R Auto Supply Night and they once again put on a show! In the heat, the two battled along with Fall River’s Shelby Baker and Truro’s Dylan Blenkhorn, two former champs in the division with Casey making the pass on Baker for the win as Eddy chased him down to the line. Brad Bevan (Sackville) won the first heat.

In the feature action was nonstop with all the drivers going for position in the 15-lap affair. Eddy (Lower Sackville) had to make his way from the rear of the pack, getting up to fourth at the end of the event. Baker and Casey swapped the lead up front with Casey grabbing the lead midway through and Baker mounting many charges to get past the Never Greener #8 from Prospect Road. In the end, Casey drove the car to Victory Lane, doubling down and doing what he had to do to try to catch Eddy in the points! Baker had to settle for second while Blenkhorn, Eddy and Cole Butcher (Porter’s Lake) rounded out the top five! Can Casey continue to close in on points leader Eddy as they run towards the ’09 title, or can veterans the likes of Baker, Blenkhorn, Butcher or Meehan grab away a main feature victory in 2009? Find out Friday night on Lockhart Truck Center Night!

MILLER TIRE LIGHTNING

Last week, the Lightning feature was one of the best we’ve seen in recent years. This past Friday was no slacker either as the four-cylinder boys brought the heat again for their 20-lap main feature on C&R Auto Supply Night! Last week, Lakeside’s Nick Hurshman led for 19 of the 25 laps in the feature, this week Hurshman finally shook the monkey off his back by winning his first main feature in the #145 Bernie’s Drywall and Services Dodge Neon! It wasn’t easy though as two more Neons were nipping at his heels as last week’s main feature winner Trevor Smith (Timberlea) and point leader Dan Michaud, Jr (Cole Harbour) swapped some paint for the second position with Michaud getting the best of Smith in the end. Veteran Lightning driver Kevin Robar (Middle Sackville) and John Poan (Hantsport) rounded out the top five in the highly competitive main feature.

Hurshman completed the double down by winning his heat race with Poan parading the checkers in the other. With second place point man Russell Smith Jr. (Lakeside) finishing eighth in the feature, Dan Michaud Jr. has a padded lead in the standings heading into Lockhart Truck Center Night on Friday night!

MILLER TIRE THUNDER

“It’s about time.”

The words out of Robbie Watts (Lucasville) after he climbed out of his Fans Chinese Restaurant Honda Civic as the winner of his first ever main feature at Scotia Speedworld in the Miller Tire Thunder class! Watts took the lead away from Hammonds Plains’ Kyle MacMillan before the halfway mark in the feature and never looked back for the victory. After a late restart and an altercation with a few cars before and after the line in the feature, Brandon Crawford (Sackville) would get through the smoke and fog to wheel his Boston Pizza Sackville Civic to second with Kyle Gammon (Middle Sackville) in his new RacingTrader.ca colors chasing him to the line. ’09 main feature winners Derek MacCallum (Lower Sackville) and Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) rounded out the top five in the “A” main.

Watts completed the double down by winning his heat race, sharing heat race glory on the night with MacMillan and Tim Tanner (Northern Beaverbank). Kyle Gammon rallied from the rear to win the “B”Feature, followed by rookie Travis MacPhee (Shubenacadie), Eddie Rector (Merigomish), Jeremy Hallett (Rawdon), and Stephen Morrell (Enfield). The best four cylinder drivers are back on track this Friday for Lockhart Truck Center Night.

LEGENDS

Lantz’s Steve Pye once again showed he is on a mission in the Legends division as he won the 25-lap main event but once again, as it has been all season, it was a fight to the finish. Justin MacNeill (Bedford) won the first two features this season at Scotia Speedworld, but hasn’t been able to recapture the main feature checkers since then. MacNeill chased Pye to the line in second, showing that the former Canadian Champ is close to returning to Victory Lane before the end of the season. Scott MacLean (Pictou) continued his solid season in the #61 by finishing third in front of Falmouth’s Matt Moore and Bedford’s Ed Hayden.

Vance Hanes (Kennetcook) and MacNeill took 10-lap heat wins away on C&R Auto Supply Night. The point battle is only one point between MacNeill and MacLean as we head into Lockhart Truck Center Night.

C&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN

In the big race of the evening, it was a former Sportsman champ returning to Victory Lane as Berwick’s James Graves doubled down by winning the feature and his heat on Friday night. Graves had a spirited battle with Ken Schrader in the early going and Steve Ross (Waverley) late in the race and held off all drivers to take the Victory. Graves held off Leonard Boutilier (Dutch Settlement), point leader Terry Roma (West Chezzetcook), Schrader and Jeff Dillman (Musquodoboit) for the win in the 50-lap point race for the division presented by C&R Auto Supply.

Graves wasn’t planning on racing on Friday night as he is running for points at Riverside International Speedway, but when asked about his decision to race at Scotia on Friday night he said “this is probably the only time I’ll get to race with one of my heroes because they usually run Pro Stocks when they come around. It was fun and I got to beat him twice!”

Graves, Chris Dingle (Elmsdale) and Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island) won heats to qualify for the feature. Schrader got sideswiped in the first heat by a spinning vehicle on the back straight, causing heavy cosmetic damage to the right side of the R&R Kinsman’s Auto Salvage Ford Fusion. Schrader rallied back to finish third in the heat, once again showing that Schrader is a great wheelman in whatever vehicle he steps into on race day! The Sportsmen are back on track in two weeks!

That will do it for this week’s action! Until Friday night, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track!
