RACE REPORT– LUCAS OIL 100 & FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT PRESENTED BY Q104

This weekend was jam packed with racing at Scotia Speedworld with a Weekly Racing Series show on Friday night followed by the Lucas Oil 100 CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour race the next evening. For more information on the Pro Stock portion of the weekend show, visit MaritimeProStockTour.com for the official press releases and my column to be released mid-week.

SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLEROS

The last time we ran in the Sojourn Signs Bandolero class, it was Brad Eddy putting down another check in the win column by winning the main feature on Shriner’s Classic Night. On Fan Appreciation Night he did the same, only this time he doubled down en route to the checkered flag in the heat and main feature. Eddy, Lower Sackville, won the most races in the division the last two years and is well on his way to that honor again in 2009. Eddy was chased to the line in the feature by DJ Casey (Prospect Road), who got up on the wheel after blowing a motor in the heat and driving the car back to the front after the power plant change! Last season’s track titlist Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro) took third followed by former champ Shelby Baker (Fall River) and ’08 co-Rookie of the Year Brad Bevan (Sackville).

Heats were won by Eddy and Bevan. When asked after the feature if he was eyeing the point championship at Scotia Speedworld in the division in ’09, Eddy put it like this: “My dad is always talking about points. I don’t want to think about points. I’m out there to win races and not to think about points.” It seems to be working for the driver of the #1 Sojourn Signs Bandolero car this season and he’ll look to add to that total this Friday as C&R Auto Supply Night Presents Ken Schrader at Scotia Speedworld!

Legends

In another hard fought race on Fan Appreciation Night, Steve Pye (Lantz) crossed the finish line first following a hard battle with veteran Ed Hayden of Bedford. The two battled hard for position but it was Pye who won the war on the track. There is one disclaimer we use at the racetrack though – everything is unofficial until the drivers roll through and clear technical inspection. The inspectors found something amiss with the Stuart Pontiac #6 Legend ride and Pye was moved to the end of the running order in the feature, giving the win to the Hayden Agencies #8 car of Ed Hayden! Hayden bested “The Legend” Cy Harvey (Elmsdale) for the win, followed by Scott MacLean (Pictou), Truro’s Paul Blenkhorn and multi-time ’09 feature winner Justin MacNeill (Bedford).

“The Captain” Shawn Kirk (Enfield) and Pye were victorious in the heats on Friday night. The Legends also raced on Saturday night in the makeup race that was “fogged out,” which created two opportunities to make up points in the 2009 championship hunt.

In the 50-lapper on Saturday, it was Scott MacLean and Justin MacNeill who duked it out for the lead. All the drivers battled extreme heat inside the race cars as well as the other racers on track. The drivers brought the heat to the track and in the end it was Scott MacLean making the pass on MacNeill to win the undercard feature to the Lucas Oil 100 CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour event! Steve Pye summed up the heat when he got out of the car following the race. “It’s too hot out here. I had sweat rolling down my face and in my eyes. I could barely see where I was going!” Pye finished fourth behind rookie Neil Stewart (Truro) and in front of Matt Moore (Falmouth). The two races shook up the points picture a bit as MacLean now has a seven point advantage on MacNeill. The Legends will be back in action on Friday night as C&R Auto Supply Presents Ken Schrader at Scotia Speedworld!

LOCKHART TRUCK CENTER HOBBY STOCKS

In a division that has been dominated lately by Gordon Ritchie (Antrim), it was Wayne who triumphed again for his second straight feature win of the season! Wayne Ritchie, Coldstream, positioned his #82 CARQUEST Mustang up front in the 25-lap event and crossed the line first in the feature, but it wasn’t easy. In the closing laps, Gordon was poised to make a move on Wayne, looking high and low to find the groove to make the winning pass, when the #26 Ritchies Renovations S-10 broke coming out of the second turn with just a couple of laps to go! “I saw Gordon coming and would have liked to see him finish on my back bumper instead of whatever happened to the truck back there,” Wayne said after he emerged victorious after 25-laps. Stewiacke’s Ben Sheehy posted his career best Hobby Stock finish when he finished second followed by Shubenacadie’s Terry Moore, Bedford’s Ritchie Moore and Antrim’s Brian Dort.

Enfield’s Bug Turple and Sheehy won the heats for the division on Fan Appreciation Night presented by Q104. Lockhart Truck Center Night will be the next time the Hobby Stockers will be on the track at Scotia Speedworld on August 28th!

MILLER TIRE LIGHTNING

In one of the most eventful features of the evening, the Miller Tire Lightning cars went an extra five laps in their feature to put on a show for the fans and they did not disappoint! Lakeside’s Nick Hurshman led the majority of the race but got passed for the lead six laps from the end as Dan Michaud Jr. (Cole Harbour) and Trevor Smith (Timberlea) made their way past and three Neons battled for the win on Fan Appreciation Night. In the end, some paint was swapped and on track excitement was created as Trevor Smith got past Dan Michaud Jr. with a little bump at the end to be declared the winner of the 25-lap feature! Hurshman came across in second as Kevin Robar stormed through the field in the late stages to finish third in the MacKay’s Carstar Collision #103 entry from Sackville. Rookie Jorden Smith (Lakeside) and Cody Singer (North Noel Road) rounded out the top five in the popular four cylinder class.

Heats wins were taken away by Brian Parrott (Beaverbank) and Robar.

Even with Michaud and Russell Smith Jr. finishing outside the top ten, they still hold the point lead with Michaud having a 14-point advantage on Smith heading into Friday night. Russell’s brother Jorden is third in points followed closely by Jamie Dillman and Singer. The non-Honda four cylinder class is back in action this Friday as C&R Auto Supply Presents Ken Schrader at Scotia Speedworld!

C&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN

In a feature that saw a bunch of the front runners in the point standings have bad luck, former track champ Steve Ross of Waverley came through to win the 35-lap main feature in his Speedy Auto Centre Tacoma Drive Chevrolet Impala. Ross had to hold off early leader Dale Richardson of Stellarton and Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake) to win the event, which featured a multi-car wreck on lap seven taking many front runners out of the picture including Carmen Comeau, Darren Bezanson and Sheldon Pemberton. Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island) dodged the early carnage to finish a solid fourth while Craig Doggett (Milton) posted his best run of ’09 by finishing fifth on Friday night!

Richardson and Leonard Boutilier (Dutch Settlement) won the 10-lap qualifiers for the main feature. The big boys and girls of the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman class will be racing in a 50-lap Sportsman feature with NASCAR Legend Ken Schrader this Friday presented by C&R Auto Supply. The Sportsman drivers will also take part in a one hour autograph session before the race with Schrader! Not only will the drivers be trying to beat the special guest, they will be driving hard to get points for the championship, which was turned upside down on Friday as Jeff Dillman (Musquodoboit) and Darren Wallage (Oakfield) had bad luck. Defending champ Terry Roma is now on top of the points heading into Friday!

Friday will feature racing in five of our Weekly Racing Series divisions including the Sojourn Signs Bandoleros, Miller Tire Thunder and Lightning, Legends and C&R Auto Supply Sportsman classes! All of them will be chasing checkered flags and championship points for the titles given out at the banquet during the winter of 2009!

Until Friday night, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track!
