Race Report: Kiddie Night Presented by The Chronicle Herald
SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLEROS The younger drivers were first to take the track for racing during Kiddies Night following the ever popular Kiddie Rides portion of the show. DJ Casey (Prospect Road) held off Brad Eddy (Lower Sackville) for the win in the heat and it was shaping up to be the same way during the main feature as a restart with only a handful of laps to go would set up a shootout for the win between the two, Ryan Mackintosh (Amherst) and Shelby Baker (Fall River). In the end, Brad squeezed his way by DJ Casey to eventually take the win in the main feature. DJ had two laps to catch the Sojourn Signs #1, but to no avail. He settled for second in front of Baker, Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro) and Mackintosh. The other heat win went to Cole Butcher (#5, Porter’s Lake), who was making his first start in 2009. The Bandoleros are off next weekend. MILLER TIRE THUNDER While we were on track for Kiddie Rides, we asked Ross Parks about what he thought the chances were for Boulton Racing on the evening. He told us to expect his ten cars to run strong and would be happy to see a top three sweep of Boulton Racing cars in the Thunder event. He hit the nail squarely on the head as Tim Tanner (Beaverbank) led early and often in the #89 Pothier Motors/May Garden Civic before Derek MacCallum (Lower Sackville) and Kyle Gammon (Middle Sackville) marched their way through the field. Derek pressured Tim for the lead in the feature for numerous laps before a slip up in the third corner opened the door for MacCallum and Gammon. Tanner kept pace with the top two as Gammon slid under MacCallum for the lead and the eventual win with just a few laps to go in the event, which took place under light fog. MacCallum and Tanner held on for second and third – the first top three sweep by Boulton Racing. Tyler Hawes and Ross Harvie (Kennetcook) rounded out the top five in the highly competitive race. Thirty six cars, the biggest field of Thunders in recent years attempted to qualify for the twenty five car field in the main. Tanner, Gammon and Dan Delorey (Afton) won heats while Matthew Scott (East Dover) topped Jason Morash (Lakeside) and Gary Withenshaw (Sackville) in the Last Chance “B” Feature. The drivers will be back on track battling it out for position next Friday at Scotia Speedworld! LOCKHART TRUCK CENTER HOBBY STOCKS In a very entertaining race that saw Terry Moore (Shubenacadie) lead a majority of the event and last week’s winner Gordon Ritchie (Antrim) having to pick his way through the field from the back in the early laps, it made for excitement during every one of the twenty five laps that were ran in the race. In the end, the Watsons, Bryan and Brandon (Windsor Junction) got by Moore as they battled with Wayne Ritchie for the win. In the end, the elder Watson took the win as Bryan Watson topped Wayne Ritchie (Coldstream) and Brandon Watson while Terry Moore and Gordon Ritchie rounded out the top five. Eric Neilson (Enfield) and Brian Dort (Antrim) both took their first checkered flags of the 2009 season in the heat races. Expect the points to be close between the top runners as we head into the summer stretch of 2009 at Scotia Speedworld in the Hobby Stock division! MILLER TIRE LIGHTNING We knew the talent ran deep in the Smith family in the Lightning class. Russell Jr. and Jorden (Lakeside) both ran strong in the early part of the 2009 season and Russell even took away both of the features ran in the season. But, they had a new rival last week and he was a force to be reckoned with on track as their cousin Trevor joined the ranks of Lightning cars. The driver from Timberlea nearly had the win in his heat race before coming into contact with another driver, sliding the #133 Oval Outlaw Racing Neon back to fourth. He ran down the cars in front of him but ran out of time in catching Timmy Geldart (Antrim) for the win. Trevor Smith then started up front and waged a war with the other heat race winner Kevin Robar (Sackville) for numerous laps. Robar ran strong but ran into problems and slowed a few laps later. Smith led the field but the #119 and #144 cars were growing bigger in his mirror. Daniel Michaud Jr., (Cole Harbour) and Russell Smith Jr. battled for second and caught Trevor, but didn’t have the muscle to get past Trevor as he took his first main feature win in only his second run in the Miller Tire Lightning division! Trevor beat Michaud Jr., Russell Smith Jr., Dan Smith (Sackville) and Geldart. Trevor will attempt to win his second main feature of the year on Friday night as his dad will go for the big trophy on Saturday during the Forbes 100. After all, Wayne Smith is the defending champ of that race! C&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN After all the heavy hits last week, we figured we would be down a few cars when we took the green flag on Kiddie Night in the Sportsman division. Miraculously, all cars involved in the two red flags were back on track Friday for their 25-lap main feature. But where there is good news, there is a shade of bad news. That bad new lied in the fact that there were two more red flags caused by heavy contact with the wall during the event. The first involved Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood) spinning out of the fourth corner in front of traffic. As he was coming into the wreck, Jason Brown (Cole Harbour) was attempting to avoid the idle car of Thibodeau and ended up pounding the front straight wall hard. Brown climbed from his #89 car a little sore but okay following another wreck in the third event of 2009. Another hard hit was taken by Brian Northrup (Brookside). Northrup was behind the wheel of the Greg Dowe #13 race car and was up in front battling within the top five before he lost control of the car out of two, slamming into the back straight wall at a high rate of speed. Brian was okay but obviously sore following the violent hit to the wall. Northrup’s crew will have some work to do as this was the first race back for the team after an accident up at Riverside International Speedway at the start of June. Meanwhile, Kirk Ryan (Enfield), who had been involved in a big hit one week ago, had led the field and was under heavy pressure by the youngster from Cape Sable Island, Colby Smith. Terry Roma (Chezzetcook) and Leonard Boutilier (Dutch Settlement), two top drivers in the points in ’09 had apparent tires go down on their cars and ended up being laps down at the end of the race. Ryan would hold off Smith and Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake) in the end for his first victory in his black and gold #2 Eric Noble Trucking Grand Prix. Boutilier grabbed second from Smith as point leader Darren Wallage (Oakfield) and Jeff Dillman (Musquodoboit) finished out the top five. Danny Harvey was filling in for Sportsman veteran Harry Ross White (Noel Rd.) as his daughter was graduating high school Friday evening. Harvey finished sixth in his first race in years. When asked in victory lane if he saw the drivers coming to challenge for the lead in his rear-view mirror, Kirk Ryan promptly responded “I wouldn’t know, I don’t have a rear-view mirror!” Ryan will try to defend his checkered flag this week during Report Card Night. Join us Friday and Saturday night at the track as Report Card Night takes green on Friday night featuring five of the six Weekly Racing Series divisions (Bandoleros are off). Then, the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour big boys are back to swap paint during the Forbes Chevrolet 100. This will only be event number three for the drivers as weather has canceled their last two events on the last two weekends. The Maritime Legends Tour will also be in action on Saturday night! Keeps tabs here to ScotiaSpeedworld.ca as well as MaritimeProStockTour.com for more info on the weekend, including Tim's Corner on Thursday and Driver Profiles for Scotia Speedworld on Friday! Until next weekend, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track! |
