Z103.5 NIGHT AT SCOTIA SPEEDWORLD - JUNE 19th, 2009!
On the first Friday night Weekly Racing Series show of 2009, the heat wasn’t only on track but off track as well with the Z103.5 Summer Heat Crew on site for the evening. Not only were drivers racing for the first time in two weeks, they were also setting themselves up for a long summer of racing. In the end, the fans on hand at Scotia Speedworld saw a great show put on by five of our six divisions as well as the “Z Human Race” presented by Chapman Auto Body and Z103.5. “Z HUMAN RACE” PRESENTED BY CHAPMAN AUTO BODY AND Z103.5 In an entertaining affair on track, Z103.5 presented the only races of the night featuring Hondas (the Miller Tire Thunder class was off) when the Z Ultimate Race roared off turn two. Actually, there wasn’t as much roaring as there was pushing since teams had to push their cars from the exit of turn two to the exit of turn four backward around the track. In the end, Ben Ferguson and Matt Appleby were the winners of $1,500 each from Chapman Auto Body. Thanks to the Z103.5 crew for a great night! LOCKHART TRUCK CENTER HOBBY STOCKS When we announced in the off season that the Hobby Stocks would include ¼-ton trucks in their racing division, the question quickly turned to how long it would take for those running trucks to become contenders in the division. The opening statement of said response was delivered by Antrim’s Gordon Ritchie on opening day, finishing second to Brandon Watson. The closing statement was clearly made on Z103.5 Night as Ritchie put his Ritchie Renovations Chevrolet S-10 in victory lane following the 25-lap Hobby Stock event. Brandon Watson waged war with his father Bryan but in the end it was father besting son in the battle of the drivers from the Junction. Brandon had tough luck in the closing lap of the race as he had a tire go down on his #09 Floors Plus ride and ended up finishing 8th in the field. Bryan beat Wayne Ritchie (Coldsteam) to the line for second and third followed by the Moores - Ritchie and Terry - in fourth and fifth positions. Heat races in the division were won by Stew Slauenwhite (Sackville) and Bryan Watson. LEGENDS The biggest car count in any division on the evening was brought by the Legends as twenty-nine drivers took to the course for their 25-lap main event. Out front the battle was intense and featured former champs and race winners from two provinces. In the end, the two multi-time Legends champs from Nova Scotia edged out the two buddies from Berry Mills, NB. Scott MacLean of Pictou put his Maritime Auto Supply #61 out in front after winning his heat race and held off charges from “The Legend” Cy Harvey (Elmsdale), Darren Sherwood (Berry Mills, NB) and track champ Ian Mollins (Berry Mills, NB) for the win. The battle for third was as entertaining as it was for first as Mollins and Sherwood traded the position before Sherwood put his #38 into the position for good, behind the #37 of Harvey. Ray Cox Jr. (Porter’s Lake) put his blue #55 into fifth at the end of the highly competitive feature. Triumphing in the heat races were Mollins, MacLean, and “The Captain” Sean Kirk (Enfield). The drivers of the Legends division will not be back on track until their double header on the July 3rd and 4th weekend, racing in the Weekly Racing Series race on Friday and as part of the Maritime League of Legends Tour on Saturday opening for the Forbes 100. SOJOURN SIGNS BANDOLEROS It looked like it was DJ Casey’s night to return to Scotia Speedworld victory lane as the driver from Prospect Road piloted his #8 Never Greener Bandolero car to victory in his heat and pulled away from the rest of the field early in the 15-lap main feature. The racing behind the white #8 was intense as Brad Eddy pulled up behind him as the second place runner and in the end, Brad ran down DJ and made a pass with just three laps remaining to put the Lower Sackville driver back in Victory Lane for the second race day in a row! The Sojourn Signs car bested Casey and third place finisher Shelby Baker (Fall River), Ryan Mackintosh (Amherst) and Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro). Joining Casey as a heat winner was Jarrett Butcher (Porter’s Lake), who was racing in his first Weekly Racing Series event of 2009. Brad Eddy’s winning percentage at Scotia Speedworld this season in the races he has ran is now 75%, can he keep it up this Friday night? Be there to find out! MILLER TIRE LIGHTNING Three weeks ago it was the battle of Smith Brothers Racing for the top two spots in the main feature. This past Friday it was shaping up to be the same as the battle up front was between three Smith Brothers Racing teammates. By virtue of his heat win, Nick Hurshman (Lakeside) started his #145 Bernie’s Drywall and Services Neon up front and looked to be driving off into the sunset with the win in the feature until Russell Jr and Jorden Smith made their way up from the rear of the field to contend for the victory, bringing title contender Daniel Michaud Jr (Cole Harbour) along with them. As they weaved through lapped traffic, a couple of the front runners made contact, sending a few of the top contenders scurrying to get around the slowing vehicles in front of them. In the end, it was the Timberlea Beverage Room Cavalier keeping his nose clean for the second straight race day as Russell Smith Jr. picked up his second feature win this season in the Lightning class. Michaud Jr. brought his R&R Kinsman’s Auto Salvage Neon home to a second place run as he was chased down to the line by Jorden Smith and Hurshman. Kennetcook’s Cody Singer finished fifth. Everybody will be chasing the #144 this Friday as he will be your points leader heading into Kiddie Night presented by The Chronicle Herald! C&R AUTO SUPPLY SPORTSMAN By far the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman division was the most eventful feature of the evening as two red flags slowed the 25-lap main event. The first red flag saw Fred Schofield (Windsor) ending up lodged in the driver’s side window of Jason Brown’s #89 Atlantic Bunker Gear Inc. Impala in a scary sight on the front stretch on lap six. After a couple of anxious moments, Jason was pulled out of the passenger side window by track officials to a generous round of applause from the crowd. Not only was the driver from Cole Harbour alright, he hopped back into his ride after Fred’s #05 was removed from the scene, headed back to the Strictly Hydraulics pit area and got the left side damage fixed and returned to the track on the lead lap to continue battling for position, eventually finishing ninth on the twenty-three car field! The second red flag was for a multi-car wreck which saw two of the top five drivers making contact in turn two as last week’s main feature winner Harry Ross White’s #18 car made contact with Kirk Ryan’s #2. Before Ryan could grab a gear and get back to racing, he was slammed by rookie Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood). HOSS (Noel Road) would continue to a thirteenth place finish while the wreck would take Ryan (Enfield), Thibodeau, and Mike Banks (Middleton) out of the race, eight laps away from the finish. Some of the drivers have a lot of work ahead of them for this Friday’s Kiddie Night presented by The Chronicle Herald. Back up front, the drivers vying for the win put on a great show for the victory. Terry Roma (Chezzetcook) and Leonard Boutilier (Dutch Settlement) started on the front row on the final restart and battled side by side for a handful of laps until Roma hit a slick spot of oil in the corner, which handed the lead over to Boutilier. Boutilier had to hold off a hard charging Darren Wallage (Enfield) who had a spirited drive from outside the top three on the last restart to finish second, holding off Roma, Steve Ross (Waverly) and sophomore Jeff Dillman (Musquodoboit). Heat wins on the evening went to Ryan and Chris Dingle (Elmsdale). Join us at Scotia Speedworld next weekend as the kids get to go for a ride with their favorite Friday night driver as we kick off Kiddie Night presented by The Chronicle Herald. The racing action gets underway at 7pm with Kiddie Rides to come before the racing.
