Race Report: Report Card Night/Forbes 100

On a night that was calling for a window of clear weather during Friday evening, the fog rolled in and settled at Scotia Speedworld for Report Card Night. Only four divisions were running on the night with the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman and Sojourn Sign Bandolero cars having the night off.

Miller Tire Lightning Division

In a race that was run under light fog and saw each of the top four in points having problems and ending up laps down, Kevin Robar (Sackville) put his Mackay’s Carstar Collision Pontiac in victory lane following 20 grueling laps in their feature. Veterans spanked the “young guns” on the night as Brian Parrott (Beaverbank) and Jamie Dillman (Milford) rounded out the top three. Between those three drivers are countless feature and heat wins and fourteen seasons of Lightning racing (five each for Kevin and Brian, four for Jamie, not counting 2009)! John Poan (Hantsport) put his #173 Neon into fourth with Timmy Geldart’s (Antrim) #156 finishing off the top five.

Parrott and Dillman won heat races on a night which saw Russell Smith Jr.’s (Lakeside) point lead shrink to a single point. Cole Harbour’s Dan Michaud Jr. occupies that second place position in points in front of Robar, Dan Smith (Sackville) and Dillman – who are two points away from each other (380, 379, 378) and are a stone’s throw out of the 395 point mark set by the #144!

Lockhart Truck Center Hobby Stock Division

In the Hobby Stock class sponsored by Lockhart Truck Center it was father and son beating the field as Bryan Watson got the best of son Brandon Watson for the win in the main. It was a flip flop of the second heat, which saw the younger Watson from Windsor Junction beat his elder. It was far from easy though as Gordon Ritchie (Antrim) had his S-10 hooked up and was coming to the front to challenge the Watsons but ran out of time and had to settle for third. Leading rookie in the division Wayne Ritchie (Coldstream) finished fourth ahead of Shubenacadie’s Terry Moore.

Joining Brandon Watson as a heat winner was Stewiacke’s Ben Sheehey. Heading into an off week for the Hobby Stocks, Bryan Watson holds a slim six point lead over Gordon Ritchie. The next race for the Hobby Stocks is a 50-lap event on Miller Tire night on July 17th!

Legends Division

A foggy, damp track and the high powered Legend cars do not mix very well as we found out on Friday night. Following five laps of the event, the checkered flag fell ending the race which is expected to be made up later this season. “The Captain” Sean Kirk (Enfield), Neil Stewart (Truro) and Steve Pye (Lantz) all won qualifying heat races. Ray Cox Jr. of Porter’s Lake will assume the points lead by two markers over Falmouth’s Matt Moore as we head to the Motorcycle Show ‘n Shine this Friday.

Miller Tire Thunder Division

Following the postponement of the Legends race due to heavy fog, the question on every persons mind in the stand was “well, what happens to the upcoming Thunder feature?” After a short survey of the drivers waiting to go on track, the majority of drivers gave the thumbs up and the field of Thunder cars rolled onto the track to a roar of an appreciative crowd on Report Card Night!

When spindle problems plagued the #98 Hella’s Diner crew of Kyle Gammon (Middle Sackville), the Boulton Racing Team scurried to fix the leading point car but as the car slowed on the front straight just nine laps from the finish of the event, it left the race wide open for the taking. In the end, it was last season’s champ Derek MacCallum (Sackville) racing through the fog and to the win in the 25-lap event. Scott O’Neill (Enfield) and Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) waged war for second place while trying to catch MacCallum with Matthews getting the best of O’Neill, taking second place. Afton’s Daniel Delorey posted his best feature finish, placing fourth in a car seeking sponsorship this season as Matthew Scott (East Dover) chased him to the line in fifth.

Heats were taken away by Timberlea’s Blaine Nicholson, Dan Delorey and MacCallum. Kennetcook’s Ross Harvie put his North Shore Plumbing #67 Civic into victory lane in the “B” Main over Scott and Brent Saulnier. MacCallum will take the points lead into next week’s racing on Friday night at Scotia Speedworld.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

The fog remained hovering over Scotia Speedworld the next day and the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials for the Pro Stock Tour were the only part of the day’s events that were contested on track before the drivers deemed the track too dangerous to race on. The remainder of the docket ran on what turned out to be a great Sunday afternoon of action at Scotia Speedworld the following day!

Maritime League of Legends Tour

The ’08 Tour and Scotia Speedworld Legends champ returned to victory lane again on Sunday afternoon as Berry Mills, N.B.’s Ian Mollins brought his Hi-Tech Power Sports Ford to the checkered flag first in the under-card 50-lapper to the Forbes 100 MPST event. The champ held off numerous charges from Scott MacLean (Pictou), Vance Hanes (Kennetcook) and Justin MacNeill (Bedford) in the late stages but they settled for positions two, three and four after lap fifty. Matt Moore rounded out the top five in the tour event.

Heat races were won by Mollins and fellow Berry Mills resident Darren Sherwood. When asked about what fans should expect at the next event at Riverside International Speedway on July 17th for the Maritime Legends Tour, winner Ian Mollins replied, “I hope they expect to see me in victory lane,” with a grin on his face. CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour

Fredericton’s Shawn Tucker was in Victory Lane last time the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour raced in June at Riverside International Speedway. Tucker put his Rockico Truck and Trailer Chevrolet Impala SS into victory lane again at Scotia Speedworld to go two for two on the series on Sunday afternoon.

The difference in those two victories you ask? Tucker won the race in Antigonish by staying out in front for all 100-laps and ran away from the field, lapping all but six cars in the end. Sunday he only won by eighteen thousandths of a second (0.018sec), one of the closest finishes at Scotia Speedworld in recent memory to take the win in the Forbes 100 over Halifax’s John Flemming. Wayne Smith (Timberlea) outran Enfield’s Shawn Turple at the end of the event to finish third. Turple held on to fourth over fifth place driver Dave O’Blenis from Boundary Creek, N.B.
