LEGENDS RUN CAUTION FREE FRIDAY SHOW

On Report Card Night, the Legend drivers scored an A+. The division which has seen a healthy mix of veterans and rookies do battle for the checkers went twenty-five laps caution free on Friday night. The action was fast and furious and Cy Harvey was the one victorious after the checkered flag flew. The story though may have been Steve Pye as Pye made a spirited run to the front of field – running out of time before the checkers fell and having to settle for third. Pye may have had his “mulligan” take place during the Maritime League of Legends Tour though as he ran into mechanical problems in that event, which has no bearing on the Weekly Racing Series standings.

All is not lost though for the Lantz driver. Pye gained the point lead from Bruce Johnson, taking the lead by eight markers over Falmouth’s Matt Moore. To put everything in perspective, the points were so close heading into the evening that the former point leader from Truro fell to sixth in the points following the feature. In fact, after Report Card Night the top eleven are still only separated by fifty-five points making the first Saturday Night Special of the season this Saturday a must-see event!

BANDOLEROS BACK TO THREE HORSE RACE

After a couple of tough weeks at the track for the #8 team, a double down has put DJ Casey back in the championship picture in the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero division. Casey, who entered the night fourteen points back of leader Emily Meehan would win his heat and feature on Report Card Night and shrink that fourteen point deficit to nine behind the top of the standings. The Speedway 660 Bandolero point leader is looking to become not only the first champion at that track but to win both titles in two different provinces in the same year.

Meehan and Cole Butcher still hold the advantage in the division through four races. Meehan, who will age out of the division at the end of 2010 has her eyes on the big trophy handed out at the banquet each fall while Butcher’s #5 has visited feature victory lane more than his competition, wheeling his Atlantic Tiltload/Hope for Wildlife car to the checkers in two fifteen lap mains. Who will grab feature five of the season? Find out during Scotia Speedword’s Saturday Night Special!

LIVELY GRABS SECOND IN SHEDIAC

With the Tirecraft Thunder division having the week off last Friday night, some of “the best four cylinder drivers in Atlantic Canada” took a little side trip up to the CENTRE For Speed in Shediac, New Brunswick this past Sunday. Four drivers, including two with feature wins this season at Scotia Speedworld took to the track hoping to grab a trophy from the South Eastern New Brunswick track.

At one point in the 35-lap main feature it was a Speedworld 1-2-3 with Stevie Lively (Shubenacadie) leading Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) and Scott Williams (Sackville) before some fender rubbing led to a few late race restarts which shook up the running order. Matthews, who has won at two tracks this season had the right front tire fly off his racecar in the fourth corner only to bolt another back on under the caution and get going again with twelve laps to go. Kyle MacMillan (Hammonds Plains) blew a head gasket early in the main event and was relegated to watching the rest of the feature from the pits. Matthews and Williams would settle for fourth and fifth as Lively lost the lead late to Scott Bourque but held off veteran Eugene Weagle for the second place position.

“Next time,” Lively told me in victory lane following his second place run. “It was fun, a little rough at times but a great race. Can’t wait to come back later in the season.” Lively, who is second in the Scotia Speedworld Thunder points to Tylor Hawes will try and track down win number two of the season this Saturday night at Scotia Speedworld!

SMITH LOSES POWER STEERING, GAINS ANOTHER TOP TEN

Having to climb from your starting position near the back of the field in the Sportsman class is one thing. Having to do it with no power steering is a whole different animal. That is what Colby Smith was faced with on Report Card Night last Friday.

“We lost the power steering on lap one,” said Smith the following day at the Lockhart Truck Center 100. “Considering how everything went, seventh place is pretty good.” Smith is currently fifth in the point standings, just a mere eighteen points out of second place driver Kyle Butler.

Smith has been on a roll recently. Along with the great runs at Scotia Speedworld this season, the Cape Sable Island driver has run at Riverside and his home track at Lake Doucette Motor Speedway. Smith, who won a 150-lap event at the track outside of Yarmouth last October, finished third there just a few short weekends ago. If he can keep up the role he is on, expect the #77 to be vying for the top spot and the checkered flags as the Weekly Racing Series heads down the summer stretch.

SPORTSMAN 100 SHAPING UP TO BE FANTASTIC BATTLE

How can the Sportsman competition get better at the Speedworld? Add some extra cars and some extra laps in front of the biggest crowd of the season and you have the ingredients for one of the biggest Sportsman races the 3/10-mile oval has seen in a long time. Here’s just a sneak peek of some “new” faces to expect on the August 6th and 7th weekend.

With the Tirecraft Lightning class having an off-week during the Atlantic CAT 250 weekend, Russell Smith Jr. is expected to make a start in his Sportsman ride – the same one that finished second last season in the 100-lapper with Troy Slaunwhite behind the wheel. Smith currently leads the Lightning car standings in his #144 B&D Welders Neon and will look to move to Sportsman full time in 2011.

Another driver leaving the four cylinder ranks for the pastures of the Sportsman division is Kyle Gammon. The Thunder car standout from Middle Sackville recently bought a Sportsman car and tells me that he will be ready to go for the Sportsman 100. Gammon also tells me he is targeting the Mid-Season Showdown to shake down the car in preparation for the big event.

We usually see some part time drivers come out and run the event as well. We have yet to see Sheldon Pemberton come out this season but with his third place run last year in the event we could see the #62 out this August. James Graves scored big last season on Ken Schrader Night but found misfortune in the 100 last season. The former track champ from Berwick will look to score the top spot in the longest Sportsman event at the track this August as well.

Another driver who will look to take the crown will be Salisbury, New Brunswick’s Ron Lane. Lane captured the FERO Sportsman 100 at the CENTRE For Speed last weekend in Shediac, New Brunswick and the team is looking forward to running at the Speedworld. “We’d love to get down and run our car at Scotia,” said Lane following the big win. “I grew up racing Riverglade and with a few setup changes I think this car would run great in Halifax.” Lane and his #46 Maritime Cash Limited Chevrolet made their first start of the season last Sunday after finishing last season with a second place run at Lake Doucette Motor Speedway.

Add in the drivers who race Weekly at the Speedworld who will look to successfully defend their home turf and you have a show that you will not want to miss. Mark it on your calendars now, August 6th and 7th at Scotia Speedworld for the Atlantic CAT 250 weekend and the undercard Sportsman 100!

Until Friday, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track!
