Bragging Rights and Points on the Line This Weekend at the Speedworld
The gauntlet was thrown down a few weeks ago at the Speedworld by FX 101.9’s Denyse Sibley for the upcoming Media Race. With that, this Friday’s event became one of the most anticipated stock car events at the Enfield track this season. Nine media personalities have been confirmed to take the track in four cylinder cars in a fifteen lap event with big bragging rights on the line.
Familiar faces from print, radio and television will take the green flag during Friday night’s Weekly Racing Series show. Philip Croucher will be flying the colors of Metro News while automotive reporter Matt Bubbers from The Chronicle Herald will look to bring the checkered flag home to the Halifax area. Pat Healey may have the home track advantage as he writes for The Weekly Press but will that equate to the big win? Could one of our print stars write up a winning story on Friday night?
Denyse Sibley (FX 101.9) and Geoff Walsh (89.9 HAL FM) lead the radio stars into battle this Friday night but as mentioned a few weeks ago at the Speedworld they have one goal in the race and that is to beat Q104. The Mighty Q will be represented by Bobby Mac on Friday evening and will look to get the upper hand on the brewing rivalry. Rounding out the field from radio is Station Manager from KOOL 96.5 FM Ted Hyland who may come into this event as a bit of an underdog compared to the rivalry that has already formed between the other three radio combatants.
Rounding out the field of confirmed drivers is the battle between Global and CTV. Ray Bradshaw has covered many events at the Speedworld in recent seasons and easily is one of the pre-race favorites to win it all! Cyril Lunney may have the most laps around the oval in recent years though as the Breakfast Television star has driven everything from the Jam Truck to the Pace Car. One thing is for sure though, the racing will be intense Friday evening as “The Best Four Cylinder Drivers in Atlantic Canada” will hand the wheels over to the best media personalities in the HRM! You’ll have to be there to witness all the action!
OH, AND WE HAVE POINT RACING TOO!
Five divisions will contest point racing this Friday as part of Media Night and some of the races couldn’t be much tighter. The closest of the five is in our Truck division as JP Arsenault (Church Point) has closed the gap to just four points on point leader Gordon Ritchie (Antrim). Should something big happen to the top two, Wayne Ritchie (Stewiacke) is only twenty points behind brother Gordon. The trucks last week raced a very competitive 20-lap main event with Curtis Lindsay coming out on top.
The Legend class always brings a competitive field of cars to the Speedworld and as has the case the last few seasons the championship battle is set to go down to the wire! Currently it is Truro’s Paul Blenkhorn setting the pace with just seven points between him and Bruce Johnson (Truro). With three races to go and big fields expected, the top eight have legitimate mathematical shots at the title but the farther back you look in the standings, the more help they need to claw their way to the top. In fact, that eighth place driver has another battle on his hands as rookie Greig Muir of Westville sits just nineteen points ahead of Derek MacCallum (Lower Sackville) for top freshman honors.
The Hydraulics Plus Bandoleros go into battle with four races to go this Friday night led by Porter’s Lake driver Cole Butcher. Butcher has dominated the season so far but one small slip-up could result in the championship door being kicked wide open by Emily Meehan and DJ Casey. “Miss Rawdon Rocket” finds herself ten points back after possessing the point lead for most of the season’s first half while Casey (Prospect Road) finds himself just six points behind car #15 for second. Jarrett Butcher (Porter’s Lake) finds himself comfortably in 4th place while the battle for fifth is far from over as Braden Langille (Shubenacadie) has five points on leading rookie Luke Ettinger (Kennetcook).
Colby Smith has turned up the heat at the right time. Just like Jeff Dillman last season, the Cape Sable Island driver has hit his marks as of late and comes in with a 100% winning average in the last two events – winning heats and features in the past two Speedworld meets. In fact, Smith nearly won the Riverside 50 lap Sportsman event last weekend in Frankie Fraser’s #0, eventually having to settle for second after winning his heat race. The Harlow’s Construction Impala leads rookie Mike Alexander (Cole Harbour) by eleven points heading into battle on Friday. Alexander has had a stellar season behind the wheel of the R&R Kinsman Auto Salvage/Chebucto Ford Fusion and has himself poised at a championship run with just three events remaining. With great runs in the final three events, the two could run away with the Sportsman title but one slip up could bring names like Butler, Dillman, HOSS, Ross and Boutilier back in the picture.
Russell Smith Jr. of Lakeside enjoys the biggest point lead of all six Weekly Racing Series divisions as the #144 B&D Welders Neon has forty-six points on teammate Nick Hurshman. Hurshman and the rest of the Tirecraft Lightning car field have a huge hill to climb if they want to catch Smith but with three events to complete the season, anything could happen!
Action and excitement highlight the card this weekend at the Speedworld! Action gets underway at 7pm – don’t miss it!
Until then, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track!
